Scaffolding Early LiteracyFor Educators

Scaffolding Early Learning (SEL) provides research and resources to help educators deepen their knowledge and hone their skills in these critical areas:

  • Recognizing how language, reading, writing, and cognition develop in preschool-age children and how they can have an impact on this development.

  • Using explicit, intentional, scaffolded instruction to develop children’s oral language, phonological awareness, alphabet knowledge, and print awareness.

  • Adapting and extending strategies for children of all abilities, including children with special needs and English-language learners.

  • Creating daily and long-term lesson plans that are standards-based and effectively support children’s early language, literacy, and cognition.

  • Using expert coaching and helping staff to become good coaches.
