   SL.K.1.a.Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions (e.g., listening to others and taking turns speaking about the topics and texts under discussion).
   SL.K.1.b.Continue a conversation through multiple exchanges.
   SL.K.2.Confirm understanding of a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media by asking and answering questions about key details and requesting clarification if something is not understood.
   SL.K.3.Ask and answer questions in order to seek help,get information, or clarify something that is not understood.
  Grade 1
   SL.1.1.Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 1 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.
   SL.1.1.a.Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions (e.g., listening to others with care, speaking one at a time about the topics and texts under discussion).
   SL.1.1.b.Build on others’ talk in conversations by responding to the comments of others through multiple exchanges.
   SL.1.2.Ask and answer questions about key details in a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media.
   SL.1.3.Ask and answer questions about what a speaker says in order to gather additional information or clarify something that is not understood.
  Grade 2
   SL.2.1.Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 2 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.
   SL.2.1.a.Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions (e.g., gaining the floor in respectful ways, listening to others with care, speaking one at a time about the topics and texts under discussion).

   SL.2.1.c.Ask for clarification and further explanation as needed about the topics and texts under discussion.
   SL.2.2.Recount or describe key ideas or details from a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media.

   SL.3.1.c.Ask questions to check understanding of information presented, stay on topic, and link their comments to the remarks of others.

   SL.6.3.Delineate a speaker’s argument and specific claims, distinguishing claims that are supported by reasons and evidence from claims that are not.

   SL.7.1.b.Follow rules for collegial discussions, track progress toward specific goals and deadlines, and define individual roles as needed.
   SL.7.1.c.Pose questions that elicit elaboration and respond to others’ questions and comments with relevant observations and ideas that bring the discussion back on topic as needed.
   SL.7.1.d.Acknowledge new information expressed by others and, when warranted, modify their own views.

   SL.8.1.a.Come to discussions prepared, having read or researched material under study; explicitly draw on that preparation by referring to evidence on the topic, text, or issue to probe and reflect on ideas under discussion.
   SL.8.1.b.Follow rules for collegial discussions and decision-making, track progress toward specific goals and deadlines, and define individual roles as needed.
   SL.8.1.c.Pose questions that connect the ideas of several speakers and respond to others’ questions and comments with relevant evidence, observations, and ideas.
   SL.8.1.d.Acknowledge new information expressed by others, and, when warranted, qualify or justify their own views in light of the evidence presented.
   SL.8.2.Analyze the purpose of information presented in diverse media and formats (e.g., visually, quantitatively, orally) and evaluate the motives (e.g., social, commercial, political) behind its presentation.
   SL.8.3.Delineate a speaker’s argument and specific claims, evaluating the soundness of the reasoning and relevance and sufficiency of the evidence and identifying when irrelevant evidence is introduced.

   SL.9-10.1.Initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grades 9-10 topics, texts, and issues, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively.
   SL.9-10.1.a.Come to discussions prepared, having read and researched material under study; explicitly draw on that preparation by referring to evidence from texts and other research on the topic or issue to stimulate a thoughtful, well-reasoned exchange of ideas.
   SL.9-10.1.b.Work with peers to set rules for collegial discussions and decision-making (e.g., informal consensus, taking votes on key issues, presentation of alternate views), clear goals and deadlines, and individual roles as needed.
   SL.9-10.1.c.Propel conversations by posing and responding to questions that relate the current discussion to broader themes or larger ideas; actively incorporate others into the discussion; and clarify, verify, or challenge ideas and conclusions.
   SL.9-10.1.d.Respond thoughtfully to diverse perspectives, summarize points of agreement and disagreement, and, when warranted, qualify or justify their own views and understanding and make new connections in light of the evidence and reasoning presented.
   SL.9-10.2.Integrate multiple sources of information presented in diverse media or formats (e.g., visually, quantitatively, orally) evaluating the credibility and accuracy of each source.
   SL.9-10.3.Evaluate a speaker’s point of view, reasoning, and use of evidence and rhetoric, identifying any fallacious reasoning or exaggerated or distorted evidence.
  Grades 11-12
   SL.11-12.1.Initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grades 11-12 topics, texts, and issues, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively.
   SL.11-12.1.a.Come to discussions prepared, having read and researched material under study; explicitly draw on that preparation by referring to evidence from texts and other research on the topic or issue to stimulate a thoughtful, well-reasoned exchange of ideas.
   SL.11-12.1.b.Propel conversations by posing and responding to questions that probe reasoning and evidence; ensure a hearing for a full range of positions on a topic or issue; clarify, verify, or challenge ideas and conclusions; and promote divergent and creative perspectives.
   SL.11-12.1.c.Work with peers to promote civil, democratic discussions and decisionmaking, set clear goals and deadlines, and establish individual roles as needed.
   SL.11-12.1.d.Respond thoughtfully to diverse perspectives; synthesize comments, claims, and evidence made on all sides of an issue; resolve contradictions when possible; and determine what additional information or research is required to deepen the investigation or complete the task.
