McREL Standards Activity
Proud to be Organic
| | Purpose: | As a result of this activity, students will be able to identify the significance and structure of important organic molecules. | | Related Standard & Benchmarks: | | Science | | | Standard 8. | Understands the structure and properties of matter | | | | | Level IV [Grade 9-12] | | | | | Benchmark 14. Knows the variety of structures that may be formed from the bonding of carbon atoms (e.g., synthetic polymers, oils, the large molecules essential to life) and their roles in various chemical reactions, including those required for life processes |
|
| | Student Product: | visual aid and model | | Material & Resources: | molecule modeling sets (or gumdrops, toothpicks, etc.) molecule visualization software (optional) | | Teacher's Note: | No supplementary notes for this activity. | | Activity | | Students will first choose a significant organic molecule--it should either be an important molecule biologically, one that has been in the news lately, or one that possesses interesting properties. They will then create a visual display that reflects the importance of this molecule. Although you can leave the specifics up to them, it should possess a model of the molecule itself (either physical or on paper), and important facts and properties of the molecule. This can be in the form of a mobile, a computer presentation, or anything else the students can think of. When students are finished, allow them some time to tour other students displays. | |
