Ordinal Numbers

Purpose: As a result of this activity, students will be able to count whole numbers using ordinal numbers.
Related Standard & Benchmarks: Mathematics Standard 2. Understands and applies basic and advanced properties of the concepts of numbers Level I [Grade K2] Benchmark 2. Counts whole numbers (i.e., both cardinal and ordinal numbers)

Student Product: A student line or index card line of ordinal numbers
Material & Resources: You will need to create index cards with the names of the ordinal numbers on them (e.g., first & 1st, second & 2nd, third & 3rd). We suggest that the index cards have the name on one side and the symbol on the other side.
Teacher's Note: You may need to divide the students into 2 or 3 groups depending on class size and how many ordinal numbers you want the students to learn. It is important to make it clear to the students where the beginning of the line is.
Activity
Randomly hand out the index cards that you have created with the names and the symbols for the ordinal numbers. Tell the students that they have to physically line up in the correct order or have them lay out the cards on the floor in the correct order. You can make it harder by having them do it silently. This could be a fun way to have them line up for lunch or recess.
