McREL Standards Activity


Have you ever seen so much data?


Purpose:As a result of this activity, students will understand that data can be displayed in many different forms.

Mathematics
 Standard 6.Understands and applies basic and advanced concepts of statistics and data analysis
   Level II [Grade 3-5]
   Benchmark 6. Understands that data come in many different forms and that collecting, organizing, and displaying data can be done in many ways
Student Product:Data displays and short evaluative paragraph
Material & Resources:
  • Construction paper
  • Crayons or markers
Teacher's Note:An existing data set generated for other purposes could be used, as well.
Activity
As a class, generate a single set of data (e.g., students’ favorite ice cream flavor of 4-6 choices).  Each student should then create three different displays of the data (i.e., pie chart, bar graph, and line graph); remind them to label their displays appropriately.  Students should then write a short paragraph addressing the following:
  1. Which of your displays do you think is the most helpful for interpreting this particular set of data and why?
  2. Which display was the least helpful and why?
  3. Give an example of a data set for which the display in #2 might be more helpful.
