Equivalent Numbers
Purpose: As a result of this activity, students will be able to understand equivalent forms of basic percents, fractions, and decimals (e.g., ½ is equivalent to 50% is equivalent to 0.5) and when one form of a number might be more useful than another. Related Standard & Benchmarks: Mathematics Standard 2. Understands and applies basic and advanced properties of the concepts of numbers Level II [Grade 35] Benchmark 2. Understands equivalent forms of basic percents, fractions, and decimals (e.g., 1/2 is equivalent to 50% is equivalent to .5) and when one form of a number might be more useful than another

Student Product: game Material & Resources: Index cards, markers Teacher's Note: You will need to create sets of index cards with a variety of equivalent number forms on them. Put only one number form on each card (e.g., card 1: 0.5, card 2: ½, card 3: 50%). This activity reinforces equivalent number forms that have already been taught. Use only the concepts you have covered in class. You can add cards as more number forms are learned. Activity Group activity Have students work in groups of 24. Give each group a set of cards. Have the students lay out the cards facing down. Have each student, taking turns, pick two cards and turn them over looking for a match (e.g., 2/3 and 75%). If the cards are a match they get to keep the cards. The player with the most cards at the end wins. Wholeclass activity Give each student 45 random cards. Hold up a card and ask the students to look through their cards to see if they have a match. If they do, ask them to hold up the card. Take away the matching cards. The first student out of cards wins.
